C (part 1)

Ghoulies, ghosties, long-leggedy beasties

I long ago consigned such threats

To the cupboard of my childhood

Tucked away with Corgi toys

With jigsaws and Monopoly

With cowboy guns and Action Man

And space adventure rockets

I conjured up horrific scenes

Fantastical imaginings

To feed my need to feel afraid

So I could conquer fear

I flicked the switch

To banish those demons

Arming my timidity

With light’s bright spear

I dismiss the fiends with reasoning

With logic and with science

Monsters, trolls, billy-goats gruff

And things that go bump in the night

Fright me not

No ghoulies, ghosties, long-leggedy beasties

Lurk within the shadows

Forcing backs against the wall

But climbing half-dark stairs

At the close of the loneliest day

A monster of a different kind

“Of course, it could be nothing

and we’d like to do more tests”

He flicked the switch

The light-box shuddered

And the ogre whose name we dare not breathe

Snarled quietly from the shadows
