There was a flap
There was a flicker
A shimmering of electric air
As feathers fought to fly
The pungent whiff of burning wax
Tickled passing nostrils
Mermaid ululations skimmed across the water
And from beneath the bridge
Grimed and filthy
A confused and muffled whimper
Fell and froze

And there amongst the cola cans and polystyrene coffee cups
Nestled in with garlic bread and greasy pizza boxes
Unremarked beneath the city stench and fuss and bustle

Along the towpath

An angel died
